Additional Information, Matala Rigid Mat Media

Sheet size varies up to 2%
Thickness is 1 1/2" for all colors.

Weight per sheet: 5 to 8 pounds depending on density.

One sheet is 13 square feet.
8 square feet equals 1 cubic foot of media.
One full sheet equals 1.6 cubic feet or 12 gallon volume.

Biological surface area for microbial growth; open space.  Free volume %
Black 62 square feet per cubic foot 92%
Green 96 square feet per cubic foot 93%
Blue 124 square feet per cubic foot 94%
Gray 171 square feet per cubic foot 94%

The various densities can be used in sequence or separately for unique filtration requirements. This is one of the greatest characteristics which Matala has to offer. No other media on the market can perform this step-wise filtration. Matala effectively separates large particles to small and still maintains a very aerobic and free flow of water without channeling.

Matala is rigid and yet still pliable. It will hold it's open 3 dimensional internal structure even if purposely crushed. Do not fold pieces in half. Due to it's rigidity the Matala can be wedged in place in the filter without support. It is easy to cut. Use a hole saw to cut circles for pipework. Use jig saw or sharp knife for free-form shapes. Matala is slightly buoyant and will not sink to the bottom of your filter. Matala stood vertically on end will not float. Matala stacked horizontally will hold each other down.

Matala definitely belongs at the top of the list. As you can see it is very competitively priced with other filter medias. The advantages of Matala are many. End users will need to be educated on proper use of the material to get good results as with any material. The vast majority of standard pond filter designs will be improved by use of Matala. Upflow, downflow and cross flow designs are all conducive to Matala. The critical element will be proper fit in the tank. The Matala should be cut precisely in order to wedge in place. Matala can be sandwiched between the walls of the tank for a snug fit and the end cuts will be less crucial. In order to make conservative use of Matala the best configuration might be to stand the material vertically in the chamber. In this way one piece of Matala can be cut on the 39" end to produce (4) 9 3/4" strips or cut on the 48" end to produce (4) 12" strips. A 9" to 10" vertical piece is sufficient depth for many applications and you should have less waste. Circular cuts will have the most waste.
